BLOG POST: Cloud Computing SAAS Advantages

(Originally posted on 10.10.12)

Cloud computing allows businesses to use servers, storage and applications from a remote source through the internet. SaaS (software as a service) provides the same kind of service but for software applications. Both of these services allow business to keep costs down by not having to invest in costly hardware and software, not to mention no daily maintenance or upkeep. Most companies that offer Cloud and Saas services charge a monthly fee.
The term “Cloud computing” is often explained as being a metaphor for “the internet,” or “internet-based computing.” The name “Cloud” comes from the shapes that are used to illustrate the infrastructure of a complex network of components.

The benefits of using off-site services for your business include:
– Automatic software updates
– Compatibility with all users
– Improved time management
– Data storage capacity
– Virtual server
– Less overhead
– Improved productivity

There is also something called Storage as a Service, which also uses the acronym SaaS (or STaaS). Businesses will rent storage space from a vendor or third party provider, and use the storage as a daily or weekly backup system for all their onsite systems. Data is transferred from the client location to the rented storage space through the internet. The client has full access to their stored data. They are provided with software they can put on their own system that allows them access to the offsite server. This is not only cost effective, it also provides the client with a backup if there were any natural disasters or mishaps at their companies location.
To sum up, the basic difference between Cloud computing and SaaS is; Cloud computing is your platform or infrastructure. SaaS (Software as a Service) is your software application. Instead of buying all the computer components and software you need to run your business, you can rent Cloud and SaaS services from a vendor. The service is cost-effective and more efficient.
